Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the Mexican cartel boss in question, has been sentenced to life in prison without the chance for parole.<br />This comes after a jury found him guilty in February on all counts of smuggling tons of drugs to the U.S.<br />He was found guilty on ten federal charges, including murder conspiracies, running a continuing criminal enterprise and other drug-related charges.<br />In addition to his life sentence, Guzman has to pay a 12-point-6 billion U.S. dollar forfeiture, the estimated amount of money he made through drug-trafficking.<br />Before his sentencing, Guzman told the judge that his case was stained and he had been denied a fair trial.<br />He described his incarceration in the U.S. as "physical, emotional and mental torture".<br />Guzman's defense said the trial was "not justice" alleging up to five jurors broke the law by reading about the trial.<br />Guzman was extradited in 2017 to an ultra-secure unit at a Manhattan jail after breaking out of Mexican prisons twice.<br />He's now expected to be transported to the Supermax federal facility in Colorado to live out the rest of his days behind bars.<br />
