Korea's southern regions preparing for intensive rain as Typhoon Danas nears peninsula

다나스 북상에 긴장…대비 강화<br /><br />A tropical storm is heading north towards Korean waters and is expected to make landfall over the weekend.<br />While the impact on the nation would be relatively weak, Typhoon Danas is likely to bring heavy rain.<br />Oh Soo-young fills us in on what to expect.<br />Typhoon Danas is expected to hit the Korean Peninsula over the weekend,... bringing torrential rain to the southern regions.<br />The Korea Meteorological Administration said that the typhoon, as of Thursday afternoon, was moving northward from waters near Taipei towards Shanghai.<br />It is expected to make a landfall on Korea's Jeju-do Island on early Saturday.<br />Weather authorities expect the typhoon to move northeast, near the southern coastal city of Yeosu, and head into the East Sea on Sunday afternoon.<br />Danas developed in waters off the Philippines on Tuesday.<br />It is a relatively small typhoon with a maximum speed of 18 meters per second and central pressure of 996 hectopascals.<br />While the tropical storm is expected to affect the southern regions of Korea over the weekend,... the weather agency says Danas is likely to weaken further.<br />The main concern, however, is the potential damage from the heavy downpours,... on top of the country's seasonal monsoon rain.<br />Southern provinces and cities, including Jeju, Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do are preparing for the landfall, with authorities ramping up flood control systems and other key infrastructure in order to limit potential damage from the rain.<br />The weather agency says a more specific forecast of the typhoon's impact will be available on Friday morning.<br />Oh Soo-young, Arirang News.<br />
