Relief efforts continue in earthquake-hit Philippines as cost of damages reach 4.5million pounds

Relief continued pouring into the island of Batanes, northern Philippines today (July 30) after a twin earthquake struck last Saturday.<br /><br />Nine people were killed and around 60 others were injured after the magnitude 5.4 and magnitude 5.9 quakes struck the remote area at around 4am local time. <br /><br />Most of the families who lost their homes stayed in evacuation centers.<br /><br />Footage from one village in the region showed the devastation caused to local stone buildings, with a church collapsing. <br /><br />Officials said today that the damage caused by the quakes has risen to 282 million (4.5million GBP).<br /><br />Batanes Governor Marilou Cayco said this as Batanes was placed under a state of calamity following the temblors that killed 9 people and injured some 100 more.
