GILROY, CALIFORNIA — Three people are dead and about a dozen injured after a gunman opened fire at an outdoor festival in California on Sunday.<br /><br />The Los Angeles Times reports that according to police, 19-year-old gunman Santino William Legan avoided security checks at the Gilroy Garlic Festival by cutting through a fence in the back area of the venue.<br /><br />The BBC reports that Legan opened fire inside the festival with a WASR-10 semi automatic rifle, injuring at least a dozen people.<br /><br />A six-year-old boy was shot in the back while playing near a bounce house, and later died. A 20-year-old man and a 13-year-old girl were also among the casualties.<br /><br />Three police officers responded within a minute, exchanging gunfire with the suspect and fatally shooting him.<br /><br />The New York Times reports that police have yet to determine a motive for the shooting. There have also been reports of a possible accomplice, though authorities say they are still searching. <br /><br />According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the rifle used in the attack is banned in California. Legan legally purchased it in Nevada in early July.
