A group of people in Vietnam sat down to a fish supper with a difference — the fish were still alive!

The disturbingly fresh dish is occasionally eaten by certain ethnic groups in northern Vietnam. This group was in dining in Son La Province.

It’s called ‘Cá Nhảy’ in Vietnamese, or ‘jumping fish’ in English. Before eating, the fish is put in a bowl of ingredients including vegetables like banana flowers, herbs, chilli, scallions and bamboo shoots.

The fish are kept in a clean water tank before eating, with the idea it cleans their intestines.

While some eat it, many Vietnamese people, and many foreigners, are uncomfortable with the idea of this dish.
