New Jersey Passes Law Approving Physician-Assisted Suicide Terminally ill patients in New Jersey will now be able to legally end their lives with medical assistance. Gov. Phil Murphy signed the Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act in April. Adults with six months or less to live are now able to get a prescription for life-ending medication. A psychiatrist must first determine that <br />the patient has the mental capacity to <br />make this decision. Gov. Phil Murphy in statement California, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, Hawaii, Montana and the District of Columbia also allow physician-assisted suicide.
