US Officially Withdraws From<br />Cold War Era Nuclear Treaty.<br />The United States announced their formal withdrawal from<br />the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty on August 2.<br />The treaty with Russia, which had been in place since<br />the Cold War era, limited the development of ground-based<br />missiles that have a range of 500 to 5,500 kilometers. .<br />According to Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo,<br />the USA’s withdrawal is due to Russia’s continued<br />refusal to comply with the treaty.<br />Russia is solely responsible for the treaty's<br />demise…Russia failed to return to full and<br />verified compliance through the destruction<br />of its noncompliant missile system, Mike Pompeo, via CNN.<br />Now, the only nuclear arms agreement between the<br />USA and Russia is the New START Treaty, which limits the<br />number of strategic nuclear missile launchers allowed.<br />The US is expected to test a new, non-nuclear<br />missile within the next few weeks.<br />The Pentagon revealed in March<br />that the missile could be ready for<br />deployment as early as 2020.
