Sesame Allergies Might <br />Be More Widespread <br />Than Once Thought.<br />A study published in <br />"JAMA Open" finds that sesame <br />allergies could be more than twice as <br />prevalent as previous studies suggested.<br />The study estimates as <br />many as .49% of Americans could <br />be allergic over the previous .2% <br />thought to have been affected.<br />The estimate equates <br />to about 1.6 million Americans.<br />The study also found that <br />more people go to the emergency <br />room because of the allergy <br />than previously noted.<br />Sesame seeds are used <br />widely in foods ranging <br />from sushi to granola.<br />The FDA is currently considering <br />whether or not to require a <br />sesame seed allergen <br />warning on food packaging.<br />Currently, eight other <br />foods including shellfish, <br />peanuts and wheat require <br />the FDA warning. .
