This Day in History: <br />President Nixon Resigns.<br />August 8, 1974.<br />Following a series of scandals popularly <br />referred to as "Watergate," President <br />Richard Nixon announced his resignation <br />to the American people via a televised address.<br />Located in Washington D.C., <br />the Watergate complex <br />headquartered the Democratic <br />National Committee (DNC).<br />Following a botched break-in <br />at the DNC, the arrested burglars <br />were eventually linked to Nixon and <br />high members of his administration.<br />A special counsel investigation led by <br />prosecutor Archibald Cox led to the <br />adoption of three article of impeachment <br />against Nixon, including for obstruction of justice.<br />Following the release of recorded Oval Office <br />conversations in which Nixon clearly orders <br />an end to the Watergate investigation, <br />Nixon bowed to pressure and resigned.<br />By taking this action. I hope that I will have hastened the start of the process of healing which is so desperately needed in America, President Richard Nixon, August 6, 1974.
