This Day in History: <br />Actress Sharon Tate <br />Is Found Murdered .<br />August 9, 1969.<br />The 26-year-old expecting mother <br />was murdered in an attack at her <br />home in the Hollywood hills.<br />The wife of auteur director <br />Roman Polanski, Tate and four <br />others were the victims of members <br />of the Charles Manson "Family" cult.<br />Polanski was out of the <br />country at the time of the <br />slayings. Among the victims <br />was coffee heiress Abigail Folger.<br />The slayings — in which <br />the victims were both shot and <br />stabbed — were gruesome, <br />capturing the attention of the nation.<br />Manson had targeted the <br />house because a producer <br />who once lived there turned <br />him down for a record deal.<br />Following a bizarre and highly <br />sensationalized trial, Manson was <br />sentenced to death. Because California <br />overturned the death penalty, he remains in prison. .
