Samsung is testing 5G in its chip-making factory in Austin, Texas to see how it can improve chip production.
According to the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, the company teamed up with AT&T, one of the biggest communication service providers in the U.S., to replace the factory's current 4G technology with a customized 5G network, bringing ultrafast speeds to manufacturing. With 5G, peak download speeds are expected to be 100 times faster than with 4G.
The 5G network will also allow more sensors to be installed to improve safety, such as by streaming real-time data to monitor air quality and alert people if the levels of toxic chemicals are above safe levels.
