Locals in West Sumatra, Indonesia, celebrated a successful harvest with a traditional bull race on Saturday (31 Aug).

The bulls don't usually race against each another. Instead, jockeys are judged on their ability to get two cattle to run together across a muddy rice field about 250m long, as straight and as fast as possible.

Tio, a resident of Tanah Datar District, said that "the cow race competition is a big event for the people of West Sumatra because it's a sign that farmers are happy after harvest".

Spectators come from all over West Sumatra and are often as entertained by the jockeys who are unable to control their steeds as the ones who can.
