South Korea plans to introduce a ceiling on the number of movie screens that can be allotted for a single film in order to prevent big-budget blockbusters from monopolizing movie theaters, and to provide an equal chance to low-budget domestic films.
As part of a broader plan to promote the local film industry, the Culture Ministry said Monday that they will try to seek a revision of the current law, so that a maximum of 40 to 50 percent of the total screens during peak periods can be used to show the same movie.
Under the new roadmap,... the ministry said they will also set up a fund of nearly 20-million U.S. dollars,... to help finance creative works by small and medium-sized film productions in a bid to diversify the local film industry.
