Michelle Obama Addresses
‘White Flight’ in America.
Michelle Obama recently spoke at the Obama
Foundation Summit about her experience growing
up in Chicago and experiencing “white flight.” .
According to Obama, when her family moved
to a new neighborhood for access to better
schools, white families would move out. .
But unbeknownst to us, we grew up in the period
-- as I write -- called 'white flight.' That as
families like ours, upstanding families like ours ...
As we moved in, white folks moved out because
they were afraid of what our families represented. , Michelle Obama, via CNN.
Although she didn’t understand at the time why
this was happening, she now realizes it was a
discriminatory move; one that is still occurring today. .
We were doing everything we were supposed
to do – and better … But when we moved in,
white families moved out … I want to remind
white folks that y’all were running from us …
And you’re still running, Michelle Obama, via CNN.
Obama concluded by saying that she believes the only
way to “unravel” discrimination is to stick to her values. .
If I show up every day as a human, a good
human, doing wonderful things, loving my
family, loving our kids, taking care of things
that I care about — maybe, just maybe that
work will pick away at the scabs of our
discrimination.
