Ilhan Omar Believes Man Who Threatened
to Kill Her Deserves 'Compassion'.
On Nov. 19, Representative Ilhan Omar
released a letter she wrote in regards to
the sentencing of Patrick Carlineo, a man
recently convicted of threatening her life.
In her letter, Omar asked the judge presiding over
Carlineo’s case to apply a “system of compassion.”.
We must ask: who are we as a nation
if we respond to threats of political
retribution with retribution ourselves?, Ilhan Omar, via Twitter.
In Omar’s opinion, Carlineo shouldn’t receive
a “punitive punishment,” but rather be given the
opportunity to “make amends and seek redemption.” .
Punishing the defendant with a lengthy
prison sentence or a burdensome financial
fine would not rehabilitate him … It would
only increase his anger and resentment. , Ilhan Omar, via Twitter.
Omar then addressed political
violence and hate speech as a
whole, saying they are not
“unique” to Carlineo. .
They are an increasing feature in our public
sphere. We will not defeat it with anger and
exclusion. We will defeat it with compassion …
We must teach the defendant to love. , Ilhan Omar, via Twitter
