This is the astonishing moment a 5ft long monitor lizard was found in a couple's car engine.

Santi Sornkaew was about to set off with his wife, Paveena, when they heard a strange noise from under the bonnet.

He opened it up and was stunned to see the reptile curled up in the car outside their home in Bangkok, Thailand on Tuesday (December 31) morning.

The pair recoiled in fright and called the local rescue service but they were not available and neighbours spent more than 30 minutes grappling with the ferocious beast.

Footage shows how the angry lizard repeatedly whipped its power tail to resist being caught.

Locals eventually managed to cover the reptile's head with a sack to calm it down before they tied it with rope while they were waiting for the rescue team to take it away.

Paveena said she the incident had shocked her as it was the first time she found a monitor lizard in the car engine.

She said: "It was quite a scary moment for us. The reptile was so big and it confused us how could it enter the car engine and stay there.''

The lizard is believed to have emerged from a nearby canal and been looking for some shade to avoid the hot sun when it climbed up into the engine from underneath the car.
