Alert residents in rural north India caught several trucks dumping colourful small packets at a vacant land on December 26.

When the villagers, from Sohramau village near Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, investigated they were baffled to discover that the cargo was thousands of unopened condoms.

The workers, who were dumping the condoms, did not have a clear explanation as to why they were dumping them.

Reportedly one worker said they had been sent by a company to dispose the condoms, another said the condoms had come from the government.

On getting the information local police went to the spot and seized the condoms. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Pradeep Kumar has ordered an enquiry into the incident.

An official commented the condoms were probably meant to be distributed free to the poor as part of a government population control programme.

“Someone failed to distribute them and was trying to get rid of them on the sly. They would have probably buried the condoms or burnt them in a nearby brick kiln,” he added.
