Women took part in a beauty contest wearing traditional costumes and bikinis in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, on January 4.<br /><br />The competitors also showed off their personalities and general knowledge by answering the questions on current affairs, history and geography.<br /><br />The festival has been hosted annually during the winter season for the last 87 years.<br /><br />The top prize of THB100,000 (2,539GBP) went to the winner Alexandra Hänggi, 20, who was the first-ever Thai-German winner of Miss Chiang Mai beauty pageant.<br /><br />Alexandra will follow triumph by being a ''province ambassador'' and takes part in Miss Thailand later this year.
