A five-storey building in south India was evacuated when the entire structure began tilting over but not collapsing.

The building, sited in the Hebbal area of Bangalore, Karnataka, holds a private company and student accommodation and began tilting over around 7:30am on February 6.

The 31 paying occupants of the building are employees of a private company and students, who have been staying in the building for the past two years.

A senior officer of Amruthahalli police station, Bangalore, said that the occupants heard a loud cracking noise at first and rushed out of the building. One of the occupants alerted fire and emergency personnel.

The residents of houses located near the building were asked to stay away from the street in case the building collapsed.

35 buildings in the vicinity were evacuated and rehabilitation centres had been arranged at government school and hospitals in Amrutahalli.

The cause for the tilt is unknown, but reportedly two days earlier, a borewell had been sunk on an adjacent site that may have contributed to the structural instability.
