Jussie Smollett Is <br />Indicted for Filing <br />False Hate Crime Reports A Cook County grand jury <br />indicted the former 'Empire' star <br />on six charges of disorderly conduct. In January of 2019, <br />the actor made headlines <br />after he claimed he was <br />attacked by two men in Chicago. Smollett claimed the men <br />made racial and homophobic <br />remarks and put a rope around his neck. Chicago police <br />initially investigated <br />the case as a hate crime. Police then asserted <br />Smollett had paid two Nigerian <br />nationals to stage the attack in <br />an effort "promote his career." In March, Smollett was indicted on <br />16 felony counts of disorderly conduct. Weeks later, <br />all charges were dropped. The actor denies he <br />fabricated the attack. He has <br />filed a countersuit against the city of Chicago.
