"Sit Down" é uma das mais famosas canções dos James, lançada em 1989 pela Rough Trade Records. Na sua versão original de sete minutos, a canção apenas atingiu o 77º posto no UK Singles Chart. Devido a este fraco resultado, o director da sua gravadora, Geoff Travis, disse ao grupo que não eram comercialmente viáveis perante uma audiência de 20 mil espectadores.<br /><br />A letra da canção foi escrita no Outono de 1988 como agradecimento a duas mulheres que inspiraram Tim Booth - a escritora Doris Lessing e a cantora Patti Smith. Após terem sucesso como parte da cena musical Madchester, com uma versão regravada, o single foi relançado em 1991.
