Eight passersby including two children were injured by a roadside bomb in southern Thailand. <br /> <br />The device detonated near a public park in Songkhla province, in the troubled south of the country, at around 3pm on Monday (Feb 24). <br /> <br />Police believe the bomb was placed to target a pickup truck carrying Chetsadakorn Sichan, assistant chief of Saba Yoi district. and three security volunteers. <br /> <br />The truck was driving past the spot when the bomb was detonated. It blew the vehicle off the road and Chetsadakorn Sichan was injured. <br /> <br />Police said a gunfight then ensued when the alleged attackers opened fire on the truck. <br /> <br />Intelligence officials believe religious insurgents in the area are responsible for the attack.
