The death toll in the United States shot up by more than 850 on Tuesday alone, by far the most for a single day, as the country raced to build hundreds of makeshift hospitals near major cities as healthcare systems were pushed to capacity.<br /><br />Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the US should be prepared for 100,000 deaths as a result of Covid-19.
