This is the amazing moment a family of wild elephants stopped traffic while they walked across a road.

Footage from last Wednesday night (April 1) shows how motorists cut their engines to let the jumbos trot over the road in Chachoengsao, eastern Thailand.

There were more than 40 elephants of various sizes seen moving from a protected forest into woodland on the other side.

Locals said that they are already used to seeing the herds of elephants on the road, but it is still a special moment.

Warnings in the area also tell drivers to beware of elephants crossing as there have been a number of cases of them being hit by cars.

The filmer said: ''When we heard the sound of the elephants we had to stay back and remain quiet. If they are startled it can be very dangerous.''

Thailand has between 3,000 and 4,000 elephants. Around half live in the wild in national parks, like the animal seen in the video, while the others are domesticated.
