UN chief praises S. Korea's 'remarkable' response to COVID-19 outbreak

유엔 사무총장 "한국 코로나 대응 모범…세계가 본받아야"<br /><br />The United Nations Secretary-General has praised South Korea's response to the coronavirus outbreak, calling it a "remarkable example" that he hopes other nations can follow. But, it's not just for its response to COVID-19, it's also for its fight against climate change.<br />Our foreign affairs correspondent Oh Jung-hee reports.<br />The head of the United Nations has called South Korea a "remarkable example" of containing and recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.<br />Pointing to how South Korea saw no new confirmed cases on Thursday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said at a news conference... that Seoul has been "extremely successful" in addressing the pandemic.<br />He added that South Korea plans to tackle climate change during the recovery, with what he called "a very ambitious green deal" that includes a ban on new coal-fired plants and a reduction in emissions from existing coal-fired plants.<br />Guterres stressed that he hopes South Korea's example will be followed by other countries around the world.<br />South Korea saw a peak of almost 1,000 cases a day between late February and early March.<br />But thanks to preemptive testing and social distancing, the caseload was recently greatly reduced.<br />Seoul is now exporting its test kits abroad... and holding video conferences with other countries to share its COVID-19 know-how.<br />Oh Jung-hee, Arirang News<br />
