N. Korea fires multiple gunshots, hitting S. Korean DMZ guard post (update)

합참 "아군 GP에 북한 총탄 피탄•대응사격…피해 없어"<br /><br /> North Korea fired several gunshots this morning at a South Korean guard post along the border,... hitting it, and prompting the South Korean military to fire back warning shots.<br />The South Korean military is still investigating why the shots were fired... but it says it's unlikely to have been a deliberate provocation.<br />Kim Ji-yeon reports. <br /> North Korea fired at least four rounds on Sunday at around 7:41 AM, hitting a South Korean guard post in the Demilitarized Zone in Cheorwon county.<br />South Korea's Joint Chief of Staff said there was no damage sustained by South Korean personnel or facilities.<br /> In accordance with protocol, the South Korean military responded by twice firing around ten warning shots... and broadcasting a warning... that urged the North to refrain from further provocations.<br />A military official said the North's move is a violation of the 2018 inter-Korean Comprehensive Military Agreement to refrain from engaging in provocative military acts along the border.<br /> This marks the first violation of the agreement involving a DMZ guard post.<br />The South Korean military is investigating North Korea's motive... and analyzing the rounds that were fired.<br />A military official said about two hours after the North fired the shots... South Korea sent a statement through the inter-Korean military communication line... demanding an explanation.<br />So far, the North has not responded.<br /> A South Korean military official sees the likelihood of a deliberate provocation by the North as low... considering various factors that conditions such as visibility were not suitable at the time for such a provocation.<br /> The official did not rule out the possibility of a misfire by the North... considering that North Korean military guards usually conduct firearm inspections at that time of day after changing shifts.<br />Kim Ji-yeon, Arirang News. <br />
