Costco Limits How Much Meat
Customers Can Purchase The retailer implemented the new measures on
Monday due to meat processing plants having
less product because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Shoppers will be limited
to three items of beef, pork
and poultry products. This is to "help ensure more members are able to
purchase merchandise they want and need." Kroger announced a
similar policy last week. Meat suppliers have been
shuttering their doors because
workers are falling ill. According to the
United Food and Commercial
Workers International Union, the closures have led to a 25% reduction
in pork slaughter capacity and 10% reduction
in beef slaughter capacity. Tyson Foods also expects more
meat plant closures this year. President Donald Trump recently signed an executive
order in an attempt to keep meat plants open, but
many employees are refusing to show up to work.
