Thousands of fiddler crabs were seen skittering across a peaceful beach that has been deserted during the coronavirus pandemic in southern Thailand.

Conservationists noticed the crustaceans on the Ao Luek Beach in Krabi province - an area that is normally packed with holidaymakers but has been quiet due to Covid-19.

Niwat Watthayomnayom, a member of advisory committee from on culture and conservation, visited the beach with his team on May 24.

He said the incredible phenomenon can only be seen at certain times when the tide goes out and the beach is quiet.

Niwat said: "The fiddler crabs will show up when the area is free from humans. We have agreed to monitor the creatures closely and prevent travelers from interrupting them."

The area will welcome tourists again once the Covid-19 pandemic has passed.
