A couple were lucky to survive after a tree blew onto their car during a storm.

Suchat Samithianan, 66, and his wife Tadphen, 67, were driving through heavy rain and strong winds in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand on Monday night (June 8).

The large tree was pulled down by the gusts and plunged onto the bonnet of their white Toyota. They were just inches from being crushed by the tree.

Shocked residents rushed to help and called the emergency services. The couple clambered out of the vehicle and were given first aid at the roadside.

Tadphen complained of mild chest pain but they were both otherwise unhurt.

The husband, Suchat, said: "I was driving through the heavy rain when suddenly there was a loud noise and I saw the tree falling.

"I managed to stop the car before my car engine was crushed by the tree. If I did not stop the car in time it might be me and my wife that were crushed.''

Suchat said his insurance company would visit the scene to evaluate the damage and compensate the couple.
