Thailand backpacker attraction 'Khaosan Road' renovations complete

Renovation work on tourist hotspot Khaosan Road in Bangkok, Thailand, was completed this month - but it will remain closed to tourists due to the pandemic.<br /><br />Officials began a vast restructuring of the street - one of the most well-known backpacker destinations in the world - earlier this year.<br /><br />The finished area now has pavements that have been merged into the road with smooth grey slabs covering the whole area.<br /><br />Removable steel bollards are also in place along the length of the road. <br /><br />Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) deputy governor Sakonthee Pattiyakul said the Khaosan, or Khao San Road, cleanup project was aimed at improving the image of tourism.<br /><br />The changes will also make it easier to organise the sprawling mass of street sellers and vendors, while keeping out illegal touts.<br /><br />Officials said that traders on the famous street would be allowed to re-pen once the Covid-19 pandemic is contained within the country - expected to be in July or August.<br /><br />Thailand has been slowly easing coronavirus lockdown measures, with no local transmissions for more than two weeks. <br /><br />Businesses that have been allowed to re-open are operating under strict guidelines to limit the risks of spreading the pandemic.
