A Captain Calamity set his boat on fire while he was trying to cook prawn curry for lunch.

Paiboon Wisetsri, 59, sailed the ferry from the harbour and several miles to see off the coast of Pattaya, eastern Thailand on Thursday evening (June 2).

He lit the stove to cook spicy prawn curry for himself and his wife then left the dish cooking, before going onto the deck to drink coffee and watch the sunset.

The sailor forgot about the food being cooked and flames from the stove suddenly spread and engulfed the kitchen area.

The captain and his wife leapt from the boat, normally used for diving trips, when they saw the inferno and they were rescued from the water.

Paiboon said he forgot about the stove before it ripped the whole boat.

He added: "I was drinking coffee on the top deck when I smelled burning. I ran down but the fire had already spread to other parts of the boat. There was no way I could extinguish it.''

Marine disaster prevention officer Ekkaphap Chaisomboon said the boat was heavily damaged by the fire but luckily that there were no other passengers.

He said: "From our first examination we saw the fire had burned almost all of the boat and the diving equipment on board. We don't know the full cost of the damage.

"The captain had only sailed out with his wife and there was no passengers onboard, so fortunately there were no casualties."
