S. Korea to invest US$ 61 bil. by 2025 to become carbon net-zero society

신재생 에너지•미래차로 '그린뉴딜' 이끈다... 5년간 73조 투자, 새 일자리 66만개<br /><br />South Korea's recent focus has been to revive the coronavirus-hit economy through the Korean New Deal.<br />And one key pillar of the initiative is going "green" dealing with climate change while boosting the country's competitiveness in industry.<br />The government laid out detailed plans today... to turn South Korea into a so-called 'carbon net-zero society'.<br />Our Kim Dami files us this report from South Korea's environment ministry.<br />South Korea's promising New Deal project is all about digital... and green.<br />And the government says now is the most appropriate time to speed up to become a carbon net-zero society.<br />"The Green New Deal aims to overcome both the economic crisis caused by COVID-19 and the climate and environmental crises that caused the pandemic."<br />The five-year, 61 billion U.S. dollar plan includes transforming old schools into smart, eco-friendly schools.<br />Topped with solar panels, public schools across the country will have facilities that save energy.<br />They'll get some 240-thousand tablet computers, and WiFi will be installed at ALL elementary, middle and high schools nationwide by 2022.<br />To further encourage energy efficiency, a wide range of public facilities will be remodeled with eco-friendly materials.<br />These ambitious plans are expected to create 660-thousand new jobs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 12 million tons over the next five years.<br />PLUS, renewable sources mainly solar, wind and hydrogen will be the country's go-to energy source.<br />"Despite the global car market taking a hit from COVID-19, Korea's electric car sales in the first half of 2020 rose by more than 80 percent. The government will put its utmost efforts into making our eco-friendly car industry the global leader."<br />More eco-friendly future mobility will be secured, including over a million electric cars.<br />South Korea will supply 200-thousand hydrogen vehicles and set up charging infrastructure across the country.<br />The government will also adopt green tech for buildings and city infrastructure so that South Korea has 25 'smart green cities.'<br />"Pledging aggressive investment in the country's grand new project, the South Korean government says the Green New Deal will be a stepping stone for the nation to become a global pace-setter in net-zero economy.<br />Kim Dami, Arirang News."<br />
