Massive explosion in Beirut kills at least 100, injures thousands

레바논 베이루트서 초대형 폭발로 대규모 인명피해…"핵폭발 같았다"<br /><br />Rescue workers in Lebanon are searching for more than one hundred people who are missing after a huge explosion devastated the port area of the capital Beirut on Tuesday.<br />The blast killed at least 100 people and injured more than 4-thousand others.<br />World leaders including President Moon Jae-in have offered condolences to the victims and their families.<br />Choi Won-jong reports.<br />A giant explosion shook the city of Beirut in Lebanon on Tuesday local time,... killing at least 100 people and leaving more than four-thousand wounded.<br />The nation's health minister, Hamad Hassan, on Wednesday said, the explosion has destroyed a large amount of buildings and caused damage all across the city.<br />Including to four hospitals, which have been put out of service because of the blast.<br />One eye witness said the size of the explosion was something that he has never experienced before.<br />"I felt something like lightning strike across Beirut, and then everything turned red and the explosion threw me back."<br />Based on a statement released by Lebanon's interior minister, the detonation of more than 27-hundred tons of ammonium nitrate stored at a port warehouse is being considered to be a possible cause.<br />It's still not yet clear what exactly led to the explosion, but the nation's Prime Minister said those responsible will pay the price for what happened.<br />"This is a promise to the martyrs and to the wounded. This is a national commitment. Facts will be revealed about this dangerous warehouse that has been there since 2014."<br />The Prime Minister announced that an investigation will focus on why unsecured explosives were being stored for six years without any safety measures in place.<br />In the meantime, countries such as the U.S., Russia, and Israel have offered their sympathy and will send emergency assistance to the people of Lebanon.<br />As well as South Korean President Moon Jae-in expressed his condolences, and he hoped that the damage will be restored as soon as possible.<br />Choi Won-jong, Arirang News.<br />
