'Triple drop' in Q2 household income due to COVID-19 fallout

코로나19 여파에 근로•사업•재산소득 모두 감소... 정부 지원에 이전소득 80% 증가<br /><br />Data shows around a five-percent drop in household employment income in the second quarter of this year in South Korea due to the coronavirus outbreak.<br />That, however, was cushioned by a rise in transfer income financial support the government provided to the public.<br />Oh Jung-hee tells us more.<br />As the novel coronavirus outbreak dealt a significant blow to the South Korean economy,... earned income, business income, and property income for the second quarter of this year all saw declines.<br />This is the first such case of a 'triple drop' since the government started compiling data in 2003.<br />On Thursday, South Korea's Ministry of Economy and Finance and Statistics Korea released the results of their Q2 household survey.<br />It showed that earned income in the April to June period recorded a monthly average of around two-thousand-seven-hundred U.S. dollars more than a five-percent drop compared to the same period last year.<br />Business income was down by over four-percent,... and property income plunged by almost 12-percent.<br />However, the South Korean government explained that overall income itself is on an upward trend for the second quarter, thanks to an overwhelming rise in what's called 'transfer income'.<br />Transfer income, which refers to cash, goods or services received from the government or other organizations without participating in money-making activities, spiked by nearly 81-percent.<br />The government cited the emergency aid given to the public, incentives to create jobs, and the distribution of coupons to encourage domestic consumption.<br />Spending on food items, non-alcoholic beverages, household goods and transportation increased... but expenditure on entertainment, education, and accommodation dropped.<br />This... as people preferred to stay home amid the outbreak.<br />Oh Jung-hee, Arirang News.<br />
