COVID-19 hits S. Korea's broadcasting industry with chain transmissions

방송계에 불어닥친 코로나...연예계도 코로나 본격 확산하나<br /><br />COVID-19 continues to spread across South Korea affecting different businesses, from call centers to coffee shops.<br />And now,... the first cases within the broadcasting industry have been confirmed.<br />Hong Yoo reports.<br />Starting with the Christian Broadcasting System or CBS being shut down due to a reporter being confirmed with COVID-19, the Seoul Broadcasting System was closed on Thursday, putting South Korea's broadcasting industry on alert.<br />A Seoul Broadcasting System building was shut Thursday as a teacher from a kindergarten inside one of the company buildings was confirmed to have COVID-19.<br />The nation's most well-known broadcaster KBS has also reported virus transmission between the actors and production team of one of its dramas.<br />The active transmission is also occurring among TV stars.<br />Actor Heo Dong-won, who stars in a KBS drama, contracted the virus from his colleague Seo Seong-jong who is working on the same theatrical play as him.<br />From the same play, actor Kim Won-hae also tested positive.<br />For another broadcasting system, JTBC, a program was suspended as one of its star actors came into direct contact with a confirmed patient.<br />The program's casting crew and the production team are currently in self-quarantine and the building has been sterilized.<br />In response to rising COVID-19 cases, South Korea's broadcasting industry is coming up with countermeasures.<br />KBS has secured another building that could be used as its backup master control room if their main one is shutdown.<br />MBC plans to use an outdoor broadcasting van as their master control room should they be forced to shutdown.<br />Watchers say the possibility of a domino transmission in the broadcasting industry is likely as face-to-face contact in the field is often unavoidable.<br />Hong Yoo, Arirang News.<br />
