Cool timelapse footage captures a rarely seen sighting of column sprites.

The incident occurred on August 22, over Riding Mountain National Park in Manitoba, Canada.

Sprites are reddish-orange electrical discharges, preceded by a reddish halo, which typically last a few milliseconds, and are usually triggered by positive lightning between a thundercloud and the ground.

Greg Johnson, the filmer and storm chaser, told Newsflare: "This is a first for me and maybe the first time photographed in Canada.

"This is a timelapse video, meaning that there were over 500 sequential photographs that were then rendered into a video so that the movement of the aurora and stars is visible."
