Typhoon Bavi to affect S. Korea from Tuesday through Thursday

매미•루사보다 센 태풍 바비... 제주도, 화요일 밤부터 태풍 영향권<br /><br />The strongest typhoon to hit South Korea in 20 years, Typhoon Bavi, is expected to reach the southern resort island of Jeju on Tuesday night.<br />The eighth typhoon of the season is moving at a speed of 40 to 60 meters per second and is set to reach the Seoul capital area by early Thursday morning.<br />Oh Jung-hee has the details.<br />Formed off the east coast of Taiwan, Typhoon Bavi is heading north,... and is forecasted to affect the Korean Peninsula from Tuesday through Thursday.<br />The eighth typhoon of the season is moving with a central pressure of 960 hectopascals, and with a maximum speed recorded at 39 meters per second.<br />South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju will be under the direct influence of Typhoon Bavi starting Tuesday night.<br />Then, after passing by Jeju Island Wednesday afternoon and the country's southwestern Jeollanam-do Province Wednesday night, Bavi will work its way up the west coast before arriving in Seoul early Thursday morning. It will then reach North Korea's Hwanghae Province a little later.<br />Typhoon Bavi is forecasted to move at a speed of 40 to 60 meters per second.<br />This makes it a 'very strong' typhoon, according to South Korea's meteorological agency's intensity scales.<br />Strong winds and heavy rain are expected for the entire nation until Thursday morning.<br />"Korea will be to the right of the center of the typhoon, at the area called the dangerous semi-circle. Strong winds are expected of up to 60 meters per second for Jeju Island and the west coast. Extra caution should be taken at outdoor facilities like COVID-19 test centers."<br />The two typhoons that caused the most damage in South Korea since the year 2000 are Typhoon Rusa and Typhoon Maemi.<br />But both were weaker than Typhoon Bavi at 33 meters per second and 40 meters per second respectively.<br />Oh Jung-hee, Arirang News.<br />
