An innovative Indian professor and scientist has invented a motorbike that can run solely on compressed air.

Footage from August 28 displays the testing process of the motorbike, that can cover a distance of 45 kilometres (27 miles) for just Rs 5 (68 cents) at a speed of about 70 kilometre per hour (49 miles per hour).

Professor Bharat Raj Singh, who teaches in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, received a patent on his invention after a 10-year-long wait on July 28. The patent is for 20 years from the date of registration.

Singh, the Director-General of the School of Management Science, began working on the “Air-O-Bike" prototype back in 2005. He said his concerns regarding the environment helped drive his idea.

With fuel prices crossing Rs 80 ($1 USD) in India, it is being claimed that the bike will be at least 16 times more efficient than those that run on petrol.

Currently, Singh is in talks with different vehicle manufacturers for the bike’s launch in the Indian two-wheeler market.
