With August being Women’s Month, several campaigns have been launched across the media to raise awareness of violence against women. But women with disabilities often fall outside these initiatives, even though they are 4 to 10 times more susceptible to being victims of sexual and physical abuse. That’s according to Prof Juan Bornman from the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. She says many women within the sphere of disability are unable to communicate through speech, which makes them even more vulnerable to abuse.
