This is the chilling moment a deadly snake sparked panic after creeping up on a group of lads having a BBQ.

Patiphat Kheawsing, 30, and four pals were eating pork and rice outside their home in Chanthaburi, eastern Thailand.

CCTV footage shows how the highly venomous banded krait - which can kill humans - slithered towards the group.

One of the group stood up to go to the toilet when he turned round and saw the reptile on the ground just inches from his feet.

He jumped and dashed away as the other men noticed and also ran. The snake then slithered away into the bushes.

Patiphat said: ''We were just relaxing and never thought about snakes. Now this will be on our minds every time we sit outside.

''If my friend hadn't stood up to go to the toilet it could have bitten one of us.''

Patiphat's wife, Praew, said they checked the garden the next morning to make sure the snake was not hanging around.

The banded krait snake, which is found on the Indian Subcontinent and in Southeast Asia, is normally shy so encounters with humans are rare.

However, their bites have a mortality rate between one and 10 per cent, with symptoms including vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and dizziness, respiratory failure and death.
