Balanced regional development sought through Korean New Deal initiative

메가시티•해상풍력•공공배달앱…17개 시도 뉴딜 시동<br /><br />A wide range of New Deal project proposals were rolled out at the meeting today.<br />They range from a province-specific app-based food and delivery service and a province-wide metropolitan transportation network to a wind power generator complex and a carbon-free Jeju Island.<br />Our Hong Yoo has the details.<br />A second Korean New Deal strategic meeting was held on Tuesday...to discuss creative ways to expand the initiative nationwide.<br />Mayors and governors from the country's 17 cities and provinces took part in the discussion and presented their individual regional development ideas.<br />Some examples include...building an offshore wind power complex in Jeollanam-do Province, creating a local, public delivery app for Gyeonggi-do Province, and even establishing a megacity in the Southeastern part of the country.<br />"We plan to build a railway network that can reach all areas in the Southeast and is currently being negotiated with the government. The 'Regional Balance New Deal' can only be achieved when a wide-reaching public transport network has been established in regions outside the capital area."<br />The metropolitan cities of Busan and Ulsan, as well as Gyeongsangnam-do Province have collectively expressed interest in becoming a combined megacity with one conglomerate administration.<br />While Jeollanam-do Province has plans for an offshore wind power generator complex to help boost employment.<br />"More than 41-point-seven billion U.S. dollars are to be invested in this complex. It will help nurture around four-hundred-50 companies and create one-hundred-20-thousand new jobs."<br />By the year 2030, the complex aims to generate eight-point-two gigawatts of electricity...enough to power the cities of Seoul and Incheon for one year.<br />Gyeonggi-do Province, meanwhile, plans to create its own delivery app in line with the Digital New Deal Initiative.<br />The province's governor pointed out that an abuse of market power by digital platform companies is becoming a serious problem.<br />"The essence of the app is creating a dynamic in which the benefits of the digital economy go to the producer, and the residents who are the main agents of the economy."<br />By using a type of regional currency, the app also aims to provide a boost to the local economy.<br />Hong Yoo, Arirang News.<br />
