Online culture and art programs helping elderly people overcome social isolation

어르신들, 비대면 문화 프로그램으로 '코로나 블루' 이겨낸다<br /><br />To cheer up senior citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic, organizations are offering free online programs like handicraft learning for those over the age of 60.<br />And those who learned from the programs are teaching others these new skills through YouTube.<br />Jang Tae-hyun reports.<br />This elderly couple are working on handicrafts.<br />They are participating in a culture and art program by watching the video on their phone.<br />The Federation of Korean Cultural Center has organized online programs for the elderly.<br />"Everyone, both locals and foreigners over the age of 60 can participate in this program."<br />This year, over two-hundred organizations nationwide are running programs like dancing, photography and arts and crafts.<br />Materials for the art work are delivered to participant's homes for free... and if they have any questions, they can talk with the teacher on social media.<br />"I felt so frustrated because we cannot go out due to the coronavirus. But thanks to this program, I'm happy every time when we get a packet of materials. And when I'm done with the art work, my daughters take them because they're jealous."<br />Some of those who learned new skills from these online classes are sharing their talent.<br />They formed a small group and are making YouTube videos to show people how to make an artsy knot.<br />"Knot bracelet, leaf keychain and knot wind-bell. We are making a tutorial for these three items this year."<br />"In an aging society, it's not uncommon to see elderly people learn new skills or try out something that they've never done before.
