U.S. adds 1 million COVID-19 cases in just 5 days

미국 5일간 100만명 확진... 남부 캘리포니아 '봉쇄', 일본 상황도 심각<br /><br />The U.S. has added a million new cases of COVID-19 in just five days... to bring the total cases there to around 15 million.<br />Meanwhile, across the Pacific, Japan is seeing thousands of new cases each day.<br />Data from Johns Hopkins University shows the U.S. has recorded one million eight hundred eighty two new COVID-19 patients in just five days between last Tuesday and Saturday.<br />It took around 100 days for the U.S. to reach its first one million cases.<br />The U.S., now with a total of almost 15 million cases, accounts for over a fifth of the global tally.<br />"The measures we've tried so far simply haven't bent the curve the way we need it to. We have to do everything we can to prevent this from being a holiday season that we look back on as one of sickness and death, especially now when we have vaccinations that are really within sight."<br />Millions of Californians face stay-at-home orders starting 11:59 PM Sunday, U.S. Pacific Time.<br />Under the lockdown, many businesses will be forced to close while restaurants will be limited to takeout and delivery services.<br />The virus is also spreading at an alarming rate across the Pacific in Japan.<br />The country's public broadcaster NHK reported that Japan for the first time has seen six straight days of more than two-thousand new cases.<br />With many concerned over whether the domestic medical infrastructure can handle the situation, a Kyodo News survey showed that Prime Minister Suga's approval rate had plummeted 13 percent compared to three weeks ago.<br />Suga in a press briefing on Friday said the Japanese government would do everything it could to tackle the outbreak.<br />
