미 국방장관 지명자 "미국은 동맹과 협력할 때 가장 강력"<br /><br />U.S. President-elect Joe Biden has named retired General Lloyd Austin as his pick for Washington's new defense secretary.<br />Biden said on Wednesday that Austin has demonstrated exemplary leadership, character, and command throughout his lifetime of dedicated service.<br />The 67-year-old ex-General retired in 2016.<br />This means Austin requires both houses of Congress to waive a law, as current law requires at least seven years out of the armed forces to lead the Pentagon.<br />If approved, Austin would become the first African-American U.S. defense chief.<br />Austin vowed to work with U.S. allies, saying he believes America is strongest when it works with its international partners.<br /><br />
