Korea's leading environmental experts on Thursday gathered at the K Hotel in Seoul for the Global Korea Convention 2020 to discuss the issue of climate change and sustainable solutions.<br />Former climate change ambassador at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Choi Jae-chul, delivered a keynote speech, addressing how the country must proceed in the post COVID-19 era to reach its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.<br />"Korea's pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 is a landmark declaration that will bring about significant political, economic and social change in the nation."<br />Experts say that, although achieving net-zero carbon emissions is a huge challenge, certain steps can be made in order for the country to accomplish it.<br />"The Korea Energy Economics Institute highlighted the three Ds required to transition towards a greener future: decentralization, decarbonization and digitalization."<br />And particular emphasis has been placed on decentralizing environmental conservation efforts so that private companies can contribute more.<br />"To encourage corporate investment, we need the government to ease its regulations so that the private sector can freely enter the market."<br />The session ended with a group debate on the prospects of a green economy in Korea.<br />Support was given for the country's pursuit of carbon neutrality as it aims to play a leading international role in sustainable development post-COVID-19.<br />Han Seong-woo, Arirang News.<br />
