Smuggled orangutans arrive in Indonesia's Sumatra island

Eleven Sumatran orangutans are back in Indonesia after the animals -- an endangered species -- were rescued while being smuggled in Malaysia and Thailand. <br /><br />Two of the animals, sent from Thailand, arrived at a sanctuary in Indonesia’s Jambi province Friday where they will undergo quarantine and rehabilitation before they can be released into the wild. <br /><br />Nine others, aged between six and seven years arrived in North Sumatra from Malaysia on Friday, where they will also be taken to a sanctuary. <br /><br />All the animals arrived in Indonesia on Thursday.<br /><br />The World Wildlife Fund estimates there are only about 100,000 orangutans left, less than half of a decade ago. <br /><br />Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered with around 15,000 remaining.<br /><br />++ TEXT TO FOLLOW ++ N°8XD96KN°8XE2GY
