New Mexico Expected to<br />Legalize Recreational Marijuana .<br />On Wednesday, New Mexico’s Legislature<br />passed a bill to legalize recreational marijuana. .<br />Once signed by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham,<br />New Mexico will become the 16th state to do so.<br />In a statement, Gov. Grisham signaled<br />her intent to sign the bill and called its<br />passing a “significant victory.”.<br />With this major step forward, we are<br />signaling more clearly than ever before<br />that we are ready, as a state, to truly<br />break new ground, to think differently<br />about ourselves and our economic future,<br />to fearlessly invest in ourselves and in<br />the limitless potential of New Mexicans, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, via statement.<br />Under this bill, people<br />over the age of 21 will be<br />permitted to possess up to<br />two ounces of marijuana. .<br />Individuals will be able to have six cannabis<br />plants at home and up to 12 per household. .<br />Marijuana sales will begin no later than<br />April 2022, with taxes beginning at 12 percent<br />and eventually rising to 18 percent. .<br />New Mexico’s cannabis industry is expected to<br />create $20 million in revenue for the state in 2023,<br />as well as $10 million for local governments.<br />Most importantly, the bill calls for the<br />expungement of criminal records for people<br />with low-level marijuana convictions, such<br />as personal possession. .<br />Those who have been harmed by<br />this country’s failed war on drugs,<br />disproportionately communities of<br />color, will benefit from our state’s<br />smart, fair and equitable new approach<br />to past low-level convictions, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, via statement
