Today, the ocean is known to be filled with about 165 million tons of plastic, so 25 times heavier than the Great Pyramid of Giza.
Ellen MacArthur Foundation published a report predicting that by 2050, plastic in the oceans will outweigh fish.
One of the reasons is that plastic use has risen in the last 50 years, and it continues to increase.
We don’t reuse as many plastics as we could so it goes into landfills that can pollute the oceans.
The report says that the amount of plastic is “equivalent to dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean every minute”.
Recycling plastic packaging could significantly decrease the amount that goes into the oceans.
Today, we only recycle 14% of plastic packaging and it’s the biggest source of ocean pollution.
Reusing plastic packaging could also help businesses as they’re spending about $80 billion a year to make new plastics.
Recycling is our best solution to prevent having more plastic than fish in our oceans.
