This Day in <br />History: Amelia <br />Earhart Disappears.<br />July 2, 1937.<br />The famous American <br />aviator was attempting to <br />fly around the world with <br />navigator Frederick Noonan.<br />They were reported <br />missing near the tiny <br />Howland Island<br />in the Pacific Ocean.<br />Earhart had gained fame as <br />the first woman to conduct a <br />solo trans-Atlantic flight and a <br />solo non-stop flight across the U.S.<br />Just before going missing, <br />Earhart breifly communicated <br />with Coast Guard ship Itasca <br />that she was low on fuel.<br />No trace of the plane, Earhart <br />or Noonan has ever been found.<br />Numerous conspiracy <br />theories explaining Earhart's <br />disappearance have <br />circulated for decades
