This is the adorable moment a little boy obsessed with pirates picked up baby Jesus' basket at a Christmas nativity - and cried: "Land ahoy!"

Video shows Charlie Hill, four, sat wearing a Santa hat centre-stage with his schoolmates, playing Joseph in the nativity.

Excited at being watched by his mum Ashleigh Garland, 27, he can be seen grinning from ear to ear as he gets carried away - and becomes a pirate.

At one point, Charlie is handed a blue notepad and talks to his teachers during the songs, imagining he's reading a treasure map.

In another scene, he holds a doll representing baby Jesus while the other pupils sat around him sing carols faithfully.

Charlie suddenly throws the baby Jesus into the basket below, before picking the basket up and holding it above his head.

Imagining he's steering a pirate ship, he cries: "Land ahoy!"

Mum-of-one Ashleigh, who filmed Charlie's nativity alongside grandma Kath, "laughed my heart out" as she watched Charlie lose focus.

The self-employed cleaner, from Bristol, said that Charlie's obsession with all things 'pirate' hasn't abated.

She added: "I have no idea why he suddenly decided he was a pirate!

"He wasn't into them at all beforehand, and he then took this nativity as the opportunity to come out as a pirate!

"Charlie has such an active imagination. During the play, I think he thought the basket was a steering wheel, and that he was sailing a ship.

"I thought it was so funny - and the school were great about it!

"He's just a mischievous little boy!"

Charlie loves pirates so much that he dresses as them every day - eye-patch and sword included - and plays in his pirate tent in his bedroom.

The video was filmed in the Happy Days Nursery and Preschool.
